I Need Help!

As listeners will know, I love unnecessary facts. I have one I need help with.

I was half-listening to the radio today (Radio 4, for once) and a feature mentioned that the word Ajax (apparently a Shakespeare character) once meant 'toilet'. I need to know more. What language? What play? Who, why, where, when etc? Please help!
